If your child has recently visited the orthodontist to have braces put on, we know it can be frustrating for them at first. They may be uncomfortable, confused and a little insecure of their new smile. Should you find yourself in this situation, we’re sharing a couple of tips that you may be able to pass along to your child to make life with braces a tad bit easier.

  • Be sure your child never leaves the house without a small kit packed with a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, wax and lip balm. This can go right in their backpack, beach bag or sports bag.
  • When wearing braces, your child should be brushing 4-5 times per day and flossing at least once per day.
  • Sticky foods such as peanut butter, caramel, candy, and popcorn should be avoided completely. We know it’s hard to keep children and teens away from these items, however, dealing with broken wires and brackets and foods stuck in their braces can cause a huge headache.
  • Foods such as breads, apples, carrots, and corn should be cut up into small pieces to make consuming easier.
  • Should a wire or bracket break, do not pull it out. Cover it with wax and call your child’s orthodontist right away. Try not to panic, it happens!
