Picture this: You’re wrapping presents and decorating the tree, when out of the corner of your eye your child notices holiday cookies and cupcakes that are laid out on the counter for the evenings festivities. It’s only natural for them to run for it! With the holidays being bust enough as it is, it can be overwhelming to keep your little ones on top of their dental hygiene among everything else.

But don’t worry, Hermey the Elf (best known for adventures with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer) has teamed up with the American Dental Association this holiday season to bring you a few tips to help keep your child’s mouth and teeth healthy all season long.

Have a plan. Your children should be brushing their teeth for two minutes, two times a day with a flouride toothpaste. Having a routine makes it easier for brushing to become a habit for your little ones not only in December, but year round!

Choose fruits and veggies. We know it’s hard to keep your children away from the delicious and tempting holiday treats. However, having fruits and veggies on hand will go a long way when your child goes to reach for another cupcake.

Visit your dentist. December tends to be a very hectic month between holiday events, shopping, and entertaining. If your child is due for a checkup or cleaning, don’t skip it!

Drink lots of water. With all of the great holidy events happening, your children will need a lot of energy! Avoid sugary drinks such as fruit juices, sports drinks, and soda and stick to water with fluoride in it to keep teeth healthy throughout the holiday season.

If you have any questions about your child’s oral health this holiday season, don’t hesitate to give us a call at either our Medford or Commack locations! We’d be more than happy to help!
