As many of you already know, today, April 2nd 2014, is the 7th annual World Autism Awareness Day. Autism affects millions of people all around the world, in varying degrees. Autism is a developmental condition that emerges in early childhood and affects social and communication skills. There is no one single cause of Autism. There is no one type of Autism. However, today goes beyond merely understanding what autism is. It is meant to raise funds and spread awareness about Autism. Ultimately, World Autism Awareness Day strives to improve the quality of life for all people who have autism.

If you see a lot of blue today, it is not a coincidence. People in your town and across the world are participating in the “Light It Up Blue” campaign to raise awareness for World Autism Awareness Day. By literally shining a blue spotlight on the subject, the hope is to highlight how pervasive Autism is and how it affects people on such a grand scale.

You may be wondering how can I participate in World Autism Awareness Day? There are quite a few different ways. You can make a difference by wearing blue to visually show your support, spreading the word on social media sites, hosting an event, lighting a famous building blue, or simply donating to the organization Autism Speaks. Here at Pediatric Dentistry of Suffolk County, our priority is your child’s health. We hope that you and your family find a way celebrate World Autism Awareness Day!
